bird flu outbreak in nigeria

Home news Bird Flu Outbreak in Nigeria: 11 States Affected news Bird Flu Outbreak in Nigeria: 11 States Affected By kola - Jan 29, 2015 0 Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development,Akinwumi Adesina, on Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in 11 states of the federation. Adesina announced that the Federal Government had approved N145 million to compensate farmers affected by the outbreak of the disease. He made the disclosure at an emergency meeting on Avian Influenza with state commissioners for agriculture in Abuja. The minister directed that the compensation should be paid to the farmers within 72 hours. Adesina named the states affected by the outbreak of the disease as Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Imo, Oyo and Jigawa states. He explained that the compensation was for 39 farms across nine states where depopulation was carried out as a measure to control the outbreak. The minister said that the affected farmers would get N1.4 million each. “We want all those who are exposed to report. The Federal Government just like we dealt with Ebola are on top of the situation. “We are not in a state of an epidemic and will collaborate with states and our development partners to ensure that there is no room for panic,’’ Adesina said. According to him, as at Jan. 21, a total of 139, 505 birds had been exposed with 22, 173 mortality recorded and as at Jan. 27, 232,385 were exposed and 51, 444 mortality recorded. He said the ministry was working closely with State Governments, the Poultry Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association and the Animal Science Association of nigeria to contain the spread of the flu. The minister said he had directed a nationwide comprehensive surveillance, quarantine, de-population and decontamination of affected poultry farms. He said that poultry products if cooked well was safe for consumption, adding that the main channel of infection was direct contact with infected surfaces or objects contaminated with feces of infected birds. Adesina urged the citizenry to imbibe high level of hygiene, calling on stakeholders to cooperate with government to quickly control the outbreak. He urged the private sector to cash in on the opportunity to establish veterinary laboratories across the country for easy and faster diagnosis of animal diseases.

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 5 family members found dead at home took 'drugs overdose' to escape 'apocalypse'' A couple and three of their children were found dead at home after taking a cocktail of drugs in a tragic 'murder-suicide' - to escape "the evil in the world". Benjamin and Kristi Strack and three of their children, Benson, 14, Emery, 12, and Zion, 11, were found dead in Springville, Utah on September 27 2014. On Tuesday police said they often discussed religiously-held notions of the apocalypse &orchestrated a multi-drug suicide using methadone and other medication. Springville Police Department detective Greg Turnbow, the lead officer on the case, said: "It was a fairly common theme for the parents to talk about, the apocalypse, the end of days, final judgment. Their surviving son, when he was interviewed, indicated that his mother had made comments that if things got bad enough she would much rather take herself and her family out in a comfortable way, rather than a painful way." The information was released at a press conference yesterday Tuesday Jan. 27th that covered information from a medical examiner and broader information about the case, Turnbow said. The parents deaths were ruled suicides. The children ages 11 and 12 were ruled homicides, and the 14-year-old son had a note in which he was aware of his "possible impending doom," Turnbow said. The father had heroin in his body and the others had methadone and over-the-counter medication, Turnbow said, citing coroner's findings. There was no sign of a struggle. Speaking on Tuesday, Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson indicated that people who knew the family were worried about "evil in the world". Relatives told investigators that the family had spoke about "leaving" this world to escape "impending doom" leading up to their deaths. But they thought it meant they would be moving to a sparsely populated area and living "off the grid", KSL News reported. The family all died of a lethal cocktail of drugs, which had been prescribed to Kristi, local media claim. Investigators believe the children all drank from a small bucket that contained the lethal cocktail which first put them asleep before killing them. Kristi died of a combination of drugs and her husband Benjamin died from toxic levels of heroin, according to a report from the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office. Chief J. Scott Finlayson conceded: "There are some questions we can't answer and may never be able to answer. "There is no evidence any of the family members were forced to take lethal doses of any drug combinations, nor was there any evidence they took the drugs willingly." It is unknown whether the youngest children knew what they were drinking but police said there were no signs of struggle.
Wednesday, January 28, 2015 Arrest Tompolo, Asari, others now - Gen T.Y Danjuma says Former Minister of Defence Gen T.Y Danjuma has called on Pres. Jonathan to order the immediate arrest of Asari Dokubo, Government Tompolo and other Niger Delta ex-militants who declared that they would destabilise the country if the president does not win next month's presidential election. Danjuma said this in an interview at the North West University, Kano shortly after commissioning the Kwankwasiyya City built by the Kano state government today January 28th. He said the militants must be punished for making such unguarded utterances which could throw the nation into chaos. "The statements were very reckless coming from irresponsible individuals and they should be condemned, in fact they should be arrested" he said. (Source - Daily Trust)
